    We can’t be friends

    Proverbs 13:10

Through insolence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel.

When I was in High School, I was pretty social, I was involved in a little bit of everything. As I reflect I realize that I was probably too social and free with my personal life. I often cringe at what I shared with people that I probably shouldn’t have. I did the same thing in college but not because I was social, instead I overshared in hopes that people would understand me and not judge me. Well it didn’t work, actually it backfired epically! My surroundings brought out the worst in me and instead of growing in a positive way, I grew increasingly negative. I spent years trying to undo what I learned, bad advice I took and hurt I encountered.

Now, I am lot more cautious about who I spend my time with than I have EVER been. And though my past hurt sucks, it taught me a valuable lesson! Watch the company you keep! The company you keep is so important to your growth not only physically but spiritually! If your circle brings out the bad in you or encourages negativity, you may need to re-evaluate.

When we attended the Redefined Marriage tour last year the minsters reinforced how important it is to watch the company you keep and the people you seek counsel from. Surround yourself with “WISE COUNSEL” If you’re the smartest person in your circle and no one knows more than you, you’re in the wrong circle. If you’re above being told you’re wrong, you’re just around the corner from a fall. EVERYONE needs wise council. Everyone needs a mentor or friend who is lead by God, not only to give you sound advice, but to intercede on your behalf in prayer and fasting. Simply put every Paul needs a Timothy and vice versa.

When you venture into something whether it be a relationship, business opportunity or adventure you should always seek God first and while seeking him, ask him for wise counsel in the area that you are venturing, someone who will help you avoid unnecessary mistakes and downfalls and be a source of encouragement and wisdom for your new journey! You can’t go wrong when you let the Lord guide your footsteps. I can list the relationships that I would have never started had, I first asked GOD, was this sent by you, THEN waited for the answer? It not only puts you on a path toward VICTORY, it also helps you avoid the many counterfeits set up by our adversary!

So does this mean, you should be crude if the wrong person wants to hang out with you? No! Don’t be crude! Instead learn to love, GOD’S love, from a distance. Learn how to disagree, lovingly. Or if you feel led to explain to them why the relationship is not beneficial for you, pray first, then do so! But understand that it’s extremely important to be careful about the company you keep. It can be a builder or a breaker.

Here are some of my favorite scriptures to reflect on regarding wise counsel.

    Proverbs 11:14

Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory.

    Proverbs 13:10

Through insolence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel.
